There is a map on the School Information section of the site. This location map is a link to google maps. For directions to RSD, simply select the option above the RSD pin.

4 School Calendar

The school calander can be found on the School Information Page. The calander can be viewed as an agenda by selecting the option on the top right - the agenda view will list the events in chronological order. There is a button on the top left that will return you to todays events.

The Weather Forecast can be found on the School Information Page. The Heading indicates the weather is for Armagh - this is the closest forecast to Dungannon. This information is taken from the BBC Website

Food Technology Department

Key Stage 3

Food Technology is taught as a discreet subject in KS3 to all year 8, 9 and 10 pupils, in addition to fulfilling the requirements as one of the 4 Learning for Life and Work (LLW) required components. A variety of topics covering nutrition and consumerism are taught – which are outline below.

- Food safety and hygiene
- Eatwell Plate
- Nutrient knowledge
- How to be an effective consumer
- Managing diet related disorders
- Developing thinking skills and personal capabilities

Pupils enhance their learning with many food practical lessons which help to develop their food making skills and their confidence.

GCSE

GCSE Food Technology allows pupils to add to the knowledge and experience gained in KS3 and after a further two years to have the opportunity to gain an excellent exam result. The department is known for regularly gaining 100% A* - C grades.

Topics covered include:
- What’s on a plate?
- What’s in food?
- What’s on the label?
- Nutrient needs for ages and stages
- Dietary disorders and their management
- Keeping food safe
- Being an effective consumer
- Money matters
- Becoming a wise buyer

There are two piece of controlled assessment replacing coursework at GCSE, one of which is practical based. The pieces of controlled assessment are carried out over the 2 years and account for 60% of the final GSCE mark. A 2 hour exam paper completes the assessment.

What is controlled assessment?

Coursework is a project which pupils do in class and at home and their marks are awarded to their overall GCSE grade.
Controlled Assessment - the difference is that all work is now done in class in a controlled environment. Pupils will have 20 hours to complete the Consumer Awareness section and 25 hours to complete Diet and Health section.



GCE AS/ A'Level

At this level 4 modules are studied: 2 for AS Level and a further 2 for A Level. The topics covered are as follows:

AS2

PRIORITY HEALTH ISSUES

You will study current research in felation to diet and health, mental health and sexual health.

The unit will also cover targets, strategies, initiatives and campaigns for optimising health.

CONSUMER ISSUES

Focuses on the main consumer issues in today’s society:

- Food safety issues
- Ethical issues
- Financial management issues
- Consumer information
- Consumer protection and redress

RESEARCH BASED ASSIGNMENT

A research area is chosen from AS1, AS2, A21 and a 4000 word report is produced.

The F.T department is situated in a modern suite of rooms in a newly built area of the school.

The accommodation consists of 2 food practical kitchens, each fully equipped with a wide range of modern kitchenware, a desktop computer and a data projector. A further smaller food practical area is situated between the two classrooms and doubles as a utility room and department resources area.

In addition a 4th room has been equipped with 6 desktop computers and facilities to house and use 14 laptop computers. This room also doubles as a teaching area for small group/ tutorial style lessons and as the department’s TV/DVD room.
