Welcome to the
RSD Geography Department

Welcome to the Royal School Dungannon Geography Department. At RSD we teach Geography from Key Stage 3 to A-Level. Our aim as a department is to ensure that all pupils attain the higest grades possible and whilst doing so they develop a sense of place and a sense of citizenship within the world.

Year 8

The focus of our work in year 8 is Northern Ireland. Pupils investigate geographical issues within the context of our own country. Topics investigated are map skills, the rock cycle, settlement and weather.

Year 9

In year 9, the context of pupil's investigation moves to Europe. The year begins with a study of the European Union. This study provides students with the opportunity to discuss topical issues, such as immigration and the positive and negative impacts the EU has had on the lives of us and all Europeans. Pupils then start out on their "Journey Through Europe". On this "journey", we investigate Physical and Human Geography issues in three European ountries, Norway, Italy and the Netherlands. Some examples of the topics discussed include:

  • Glaciation in Norway.
  • Global Warming in The Netherlands.
  • Tourism in Italy.

Each country "visited" provides opportunities to sample their culture and the entire year of study is an experiance for all year 9 pupils as they see and taste life beyond their own community.

Year 10

The year 10 scheme of work is focused on "The World". Having already had the opportunity too look at themselves in the context of Europe, the year 10 programme of study give pupils a greater insight into the world by looking at 3 topics; Development, Tectonics and Ecosystems.

The first term is focused on development and the differences that exist in different parts of the world. Pupils have the opportunity to get involved with numerous political and ethical issues, including running a Fairtrade stall and writing letters to MP's, MEP's and MLA's. The aim of this study is that all children realise that they have an important role to play in the decisions that impact the world and that they can make a difference.

Term two is spent looking at tectonic activity around the world. This has always been a topic that pupils get excited about and at RSD we aim to build on that excitement. Time is spent looking at the theory behind plate tectonics and then we investigate different tectonic events in both the rich and poor world, such as the 2004 Tsunami, the 2009 Haiti earthquake and the Mount St. Helens erruption in 1980.

The final term of Year 10 is spent investigating ecosystems, in particular, the Amazon Rainforest. In this shorter study, pupils have the opportunity to go out into the field and look at the variety of ecosystems that exist on our own doorstep. The BBC Planet Earth TV series is also used to support learning.

At GCSE level we follow the CCEA revised curriculum.

Geography is a useful subject, in that it encompasses the science subjects and the arts subjects. Its diverse nature allows for a wide range of skills to be developed. These include preparation and collection of data, presenting and interpreting data, writing up reports, teamwork, decision making, as well as the use of ICT. In essence, geography enables pupils to interpret the world they see today while preparing them to live in a world that will be different in future.

There are three specialist classrooms in the geography department, each containing a computer and data projector. A Television and DVD/Video unit is also available. The three classrooms share a colour printer and an overhead projector. Practical equipment is available for any fieldwork to be carried out such as coursework for GCSE/A level classes. The students can also access the school's MET weather station.

Teachers: Ms. Montgomery (HoD), Mr. Turner, Ms. Garvin, Mr Patton

Welcome to the resources section for pupils and parents alike. Below are a number of links to CCEA documents for the GCSE, AS and A2 courses. We would encourage all pupils studying Geography at any of these levels to use the CCEA resources throughout their course. As more resources become available, both from CCEA and from RSD, we will update this page, so please check in again soon.
