Royal School Dungannon had the privilege of welcoming the Boarding Schools’ Association National Director, Mr Robin Fletcher, for a visit to the school. As part of the Boarding Orchard initiative started in 2014, RSD was the 126th boarding school to have a tree planted by Mr Fletcher and the 4th in Northern Ireland.

Mr Fletcher was joined by our Headmaster, Dr Burnett, boarding staff, Miss Winslow and Mr Boyd and boarding pupils; Avis, Erioluwa, Benson, Mariia and Tiffany for the planting of the tree.

During his visit, Mr Fletcher enjoyed touring the school’s Boarding facilities and meeting many of the boarding pupils who were able to share their experiences with him.

Nine members of the RSD Shooting Club competed in the Northern Ireland Championships, held at the East Antrim Club, Ballyclare on Wednesday 1st March. This was a very successful visit. Several shooters recorded personal bests. These included Angel To (Yr13) (285 ex 300 with a 98) and Caitlin Canavan (Yr11) (286 ex 300 also with a 98). Adam McMinn (Yr14) and Caitlin Canavan were our top scorers. Our Boarding students were also well represented and shot well; Angel To, Andy Yu (Yr13), Brian Cheung (Yr14) and David Clarkson (Yr12). Though not quite at ‘their best’, Zack El Marif (Yr12) and Rhyss McMullan (Yr12) also performed creditably. At the moment we do not know their placings in the Northern Ireland context.

We are in the final rounds of our league competitions. Currently our ‘A’ team is leading in their league; Adam McMinn, Zack el Marif and Thomas Ferguson (Yr14). Now that Spring is here we are looking forward to shooting outdoors.

Many thanks to Mr A Kelly for providing the information for our Shooting Team report.

Yesterday we were delighted to welcome Boarding Agents from various parts of the world to RSD, for an information and fact finding visit. After a tour of the school and classrooms from current Boarding staff and pupils, our visitors heard a little of our school history from Dr Burnett, before viewing our facilities within the “Old Grey Mother” and in the Boarding Department itself.

The group enjoyed lunch at the school before heading off on a trip to Armagh Planetarium.

It was a great pleasure to host the British Boarding Schools Workshop Agents and we would look forward to another visit in the future.

Three new Dilworth Tutors for 2017, our ‘Kiwis’, were welcomed from Dilworth School Auckland into RSD in January.

Tau Tohi, Jonah Mau’u and Nico Aholelei arrived in Northern Ireland at the beginning of the Easter Term and all three have smoothly transitioned into their roles within classes, extra-curricular activities and in the Boarding Department.

We hope that they enjoy their stay and experiences in both Northern Ireland and RSD in particular.

RSD staff and students were pleasantly surprised recently when Ethan Au, one of the Dilworth tutors from 2010, came back to Dungannon and paid a visit all of us at RSD. He got a chance to see all the teachers he was working with while on his scholarship and even got a chance to catch up with the (now Upper Sixth!) pupils, who had just come into the school in First Year when Ethan last saw them 6 years ago.

Well done to Sincere Tang and Winsome Wong (Year 14). The girls are pictured with the Headmaster who presented them with their NI representative badges after both girls competed in the British Schools Small-bore Match.

Dr Burnett presented Sincere with her Winter League silver medal, for winning the 2nd Division Short Range Rifle match. She was also winner of the Courtney Cup (awarded each year to the school’s best shooter).
