Duke of Edinburgh Award

What is the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award?

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award aims to provide for young people an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development, which is of the highest quality and the widest reach.

There are five main areas of the Duke of Edinburgh’s award: Volunteering, Skill, Physical recreation, Residential (Gold Award Only).

R.S.D. offers the Award at Silver and Gold levels. During year 11 pupils are given the opportunity to apply to take the Silver Award. However due to limited staff qualified only a small number of pupils can participate. Pupils are therefore selected at random. However pupils are given the chance to apply again in year 13 for direct entry into the Gold Award.

The expedition section of the course takes place in the Mourne Mountains for the Silver Award, whereas Gold Award participant complete their expedition in Donegal. The other sections are left up to the participants to complete themselves over a period of time. These other sections give participants a chance to take up new activities and become involved in the community.
