On Wednesday 15th February, RSD 1st XI travelled to Coleraine, to play Coleraine High School in the second round of the Schools Plate. Both team started slowly, with Coleraine having the greater possession in the first ten minutes.  However RSD began to play themselves into the game, with great runs from Georgina Mulligan, and superb individual play from Karen Elliott. Well done to Erin and Calum Bain (Year 11), who competed in the Irish Schools Swimming competition in Dublin last weekend.

Competing in the Intermediate section, Calum finished in fifth place in the 100m freestyle and eighth in the 100m backstroke.  Within his under-15 age category, Calum ranked in second place in the freestyle and third in the backstroke.

His sister Erin also put in a superb performance to finish in third within the Intermediate section of the 100m breaststroke – first in the under-15 age category.

Congratulations to Erin and Calum on these outstanding achievements!

On Friday 10th February, seven pupils from Year 14 attended a “Leaving home – Staying safe” seminar in South West College, Dungannon.  The talk was aimed at informing Year 14 pupils of the potential dangers of university life, and how to be best prepared.  Short clips and talks were given in relation to finance, fire safety, road safety, keeping property secure, domestic violence and drug abuse. The pupils who attended found the information given very relevant and feel more informed of the some of the issues which surrounds life at university.

 On 26th January 2012, RSD’s Year 9 went to see the Ulster Orchestra at the Ulster Hall. We left for the Hall at 9.30 am, and after a long bus ride, we arrived at the Hall. We waited for a short while in the corridor outside the Hall while the orchestra were rehearsing, and then went in the hall itself. Continue reading »

On Saturday 3rd of February, the U14 A hockey team left RSD at 7am to travel to Ballymena Showgrounds to take on Cambridge House in the quarter final of the U14 Plate. The early start allowed the team a thorough warm up which was needed in the very wet and rainy conditions. As the match commenced, Cambridge House, using home advantage, put RSD under a lot of pressure and only excellent defending by Jayne McCurdy, Diane McClements, Kathryn Shaw and Sophie Steenson allowed goalkeeper Alana McMullan to keep a clean sheet. On Tuesday 7th February, the 2nd XI travelled to Strabane to play Strabane Academy in the Schools Plate. The girls started slowly defending against a strong Strabane side in the first 10 minutes. The girls soon picked up pace and began to attack the Strabane goal with a great goal coming from Jemma Hall. The second half started well with the girls having many opportunities to score. Last week was Fair Trade Week in RSD.  Fair Trade produce  was sold from Tuesday 31st January to Friday 3rd February at break and lunch in the Foyer.  The week was a great success, so well done to all who were involved.

On Thursday 2nd February, a special event focused on the issue of cyberbullying was held for year 10.  The event, held at South West College, was designed to raise awareness of the ways in which cyberbullying can be a problem in this age of the internet, social media and mobile technology.

The event was organised by the PSNI schools officer, who in turn arranged for BEAM productions to perform a drama which showed just how hurtful and emotionally damaging it can be for an individual.

On Thursday 26th January, 16 pupils from RSD travelled to the Valley Leisure Centre, Newtownards, to compete in the Ulster School’s Individual Table Tennis Championships. RSD secured two gold medals, from Neil Irwin who won the U16 Boys’ and Ashley Given who won the U19 Girl’s. 

There was also one silver medal from Caron Jones in the U12 Girls and one bronze medal from Kerry Jones in the U19 Girls.  Jane Mcclements, Lucy Talbot, Jemma Hall, Samantha Kelly, Matthew Maguire, Michael Jones, Megan Haden, Jo McKeown and Emma Thompson all made it through the group stages into the 2nd round, but unfortunately faced tough competition.  Karen Elliott, Ruth Montgomery and Louise Maguire also competed on Thursday. On Tuesday 31st January, RSD’s 1st XI hockey team travelled to Bangor to play Glenola Collegiate in the 1st round of the Schools Plate.
