Congratulations to our 1st XV boys on winning the Danske Bank Schools’ Trophy final, 39-14 against Larne Grammar on Wednesday 4th March. The match report follows, with thanks to Mr McClintock.
“RSD started the match with an initial attack in the Larne GS half after forcing them to knock on the kick off. However Larne managed to hold RSD out and were awarded a penalty which then led to a number of attacks against the RSD defence, which eventually broke to allow Larne to take a 7-0 lead. This wake up call seemed to be the fuel for the flurry of RSD attacking phases that followed. RSD scored their first two unconverted tries through Jamie Allen. With the score at 10-7 RSD were able to settle and control the play. Peter Busby finished off in the corner after some impressive team play. Brothers Jack and James Girvan both added to the try count before half time, leaving the score 29-14.
The second half was much tighter but RSD always looked in control of the score line. Michael Tate put in a solid performance throughout the final and was rewarded with the first try of the second half. Jonny McCammond then capped the day off with a break from his own 22m, out pacing a number of Larne players to add 5 points. This left the final score at 39-14 and RSD captain Jack Girvan led his team up to lift the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Trophy.”
