P7 Open Mornings

Dear P7 Parents & Pupils,

I hope you enjoyed the Christmas holiday period and, like us, are looking forward to our P7 Open Mornings. We believe that the best thing about RSD is the way in which pupils and staff work together every day and we want to give you a chance to experience something of the typical RSD school day.

At RSD, we have two events each year – the P7 Open Mornings and the P6 Open Evening. We enjoyed meeting many of you at our P6 event back in February 2023. Like other schools, our P6 Open Evening has lots of activity and a bit of razzmatazz as families tour the school and meet RSD teachers and pupils. The P7 Open Mornings are a very different kind of event and organised with much smaller groups to allow you to see the real school day in action.

Signing up for the P7 Open Morning

The Open Mornings run for 3 days at the end of January. We know that P7 pupils like to be with their friends, so we have organised a specific day for some of the larger primary school groups. If you attend one of those schools, then you do not need to do anything more. Just turn up on the day!

  • Tuesday 23rdth January – Bush Primary School, Killyman Primary School
  • Wednesday 24th January – Aughnacloy Primary School, Howard Primary School, Richmond Primary School
  • Thursday 25th January – Dungannon Primary School, St Patrick’s Primary School

We would ask P7 parents and pupils in all other primary schools to sign up for a slot by clicking on the link below. It is an easy-to-use online system and it will give you flexibility to choose one of the three Open Mornings.

On the Day

Pupils should be accompanied by a responsible adult during the P7 Open Morning. The event will start at 9.00 am and we would ask you to arrive shortly before that time so we can have a prompt start. When you arrive, please enter through the front doors and make your way to the Assembly Hall. After a short talk from me, we will then divide you up into small groups and take you round school. The tours will be led by Prefects and pupils from Years 8 and 9 (and you may recognise a face or two!) and they will show you around the school and its facilities. This will include going outside for a little while so you may wish to bring a coat.

The aim of the tour is to give you a chance to see the real school in action, pausing briefly at various points to look into a class and hear a little bit about what they are doing. Unlike an open night event, when schools are putting on a show, you will get to see what it is really like to be a pupil at RSD. The teachers will be teaching their normal lessons and the pupils will be doing their usual work. We will then come back together in the Assembly Hall for refreshments and the event will be finished by 11.00 am at the latest.

We would ask that ONE parent or other responsible adult stays with the child throughout the P7 Open Morning. We understand that this may not be possible for every individual child and that sometimes one adult will bring 2-3 children who are friends. This is fine too. If a parent/adult feels that they are not able to stay with their child, then please do contact us in advance and we will help to ensure that your child can still attend.

The information about the Open Mornings has been sent to every parent for whom we have an email address. We have also sent the information to all Primary School principals and asked that they share this with P7 parents. In addition, the details can be found on the RSD website and social media pages. If you know of someone who would be interested in coming along to the Open Morning, then please do share this information with them and encourage them to contact RSD.

We look forward to seeing you later this month.

Yours sincerely,

RJ Clingan
