In October 2023, four teachers and 39 Spanish students met at 1:30 AM outside RSD. Due to this early start everyone made it safely to Barcelona El Prat Airport by 9AM. Despite everyone being incredibly tired, we all managed to go on a sightseeing tour around Barcelona. Seeing famous landmarks such as: La Sagrada Familia, Plaça d’Espanya, Casa Battló and many more buildings designed by Antoni Gaudí. Then, the need for sleep finally won the battle as we began our 1.5 hour bus journey to the Medplaya Hotel Calypso in Salou. That night we savoured delicious traditional Spanish dishes like Paella and Gazpacho, however some less adventurous students went for chips! After everyone was fully rested and had enjoyed a plentiful buffet breakfast, we hit the road again – back to Barcelona. Everyone’s jetlag was instantly cured as we swiftly arrived at Barcelona Zoo, fan favourites were flamingos, tigers, giraffes, elephants and zebras. Yet the most memorable animal of our trip was… the capybaras. After we stocked up at Las Ramblas and La Boquería food market, we continued our adventure and went on a tour inside La Sagrada Familia. The multitude of vibrant colours clashing could only be described as captivating, as the light beams captured the coloured stained glass – creating mini rainbows across the high walls and architectural ceilings. Later that night our teachers organised a birthday surprise during the hotel’s entertainment night. We celebrated Ellie’s 16th Birthday; accompanied by live music, dancing and cake.

From October 13th to 15th, a memorable weekend unfolded in Barcelona, combining adventure, culture, and science. Friday, October 13th started with a visit to the breathtaking Montserrat in the morning, exploring its rugged beauty and spiritual significance. In the afternoon, the CosmoCaixa Science Museum captivated with its interactive exhibits, sparking curiosity and wonder.

Saturday, October 14th was all about thrill and fun. The morning kicked off with a heart-pounding visit to Port Aventura, an adrenaline-filled amusement park as the pupils and staff hopped on the exhilarating coasters. The day wrapped up with a friendly competition of bowling.

Sunday, October 15th brought a bittersweet conclusion as we packed up for the airport, before stopping off for some last-minute culture, souvenirs and sunshine in the beautiful World Heritage town of Tarragona. Barcelona, with its mix of architecture, nature, science, and excitement, left a lasting impression, and we can’t wait to tick off the next destination!
