Life & Health Sciences A Level (CCEA Modular)

In this new A Level, pupils learn to appreciate how science contributes in a fundamental way to both economic success and the success of society.

They explore how different scientific industries rely upon one another in order to grow and develop; how society makes decisions about scientific issues; and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society.

The course will also develop pupils’ competence in a full range of key practical, mathematical and problem-solving skills.

Curriculum

Unit AS 1:  Experimental Techniques
This unit is internally assessed with pupils completing a portfolio of evidence. It is worth 33.34% of AS and 13.34% of A level.

Unit AS 2:  Human Body Systems
Unit AS 3:  Aspects of Physical Chemistry in Industrial Processes

Both units 2 and 3 are assessed through an external examination consisting of a series of compulsory structured questions, some of which may allow opportunities for extended writing (1 hour 30 mins). Each unit is worth 33.33% of AS and 13.33% of A level

Unit A2 1: Scientific Method, Investigation, Analysis and Evaluation
Pupils complete a portfolio of evidence that includes an essay, plans, a lab book, and a report with analysis and evaluation. This unit is internally assessed and is worth 20% of A Level.

Unit A2 2: Organic Chemistry
This unit is assessed through an external examination consisting of a series of compulsory structured questions, some of which may allow opportunities for extended writing (1 hour 45 mins). This unit is worth 20% of A Level.

Pupils study any one of these three units. The unit is worth 20% of A Level.

Unit A2 3: Medical Physics
Unit A2 4: Sound and Light
Unit A2 5: Genetics, Stem Cell Research and Cloning

Each unit is assessed through an external examination consisting of compulsory structured questions, some of which allow opportunities for calculation and extended writing (1 hour 45 mins).
