As part of the new environmentally friendly initiative started back in school in 2011, the RSD action group has this year focused on the reduction on litter on school grounds and the increase of recycling in school. Last year the school secured the Bronze award and in its attempt to achieve the Eco School Silver award status this year a new KS3 competition was set up to create a new RSD Eco Code, alongside other programmes including a litter pick and tree planting. The purpose of the code was to encourage our pupils to take ownership of the responsibility to look after their litter in school and to demonstrate the school’s commitment to environmentally friendly actions. Pupils had the opportunity to deliver their message in a variety of media including; creating a poem, designing a poster or the use of a catchy acronym or slogan (as long as it has an environmentally friendly message).

The winning entry, judged by the action group, was a joint effort by Year 9 pupils Sasha Taggart and Rachel Johnson. The winning poster, with the slogan of :‘Wanna Be Cool, Be Eco Friendly towards Our School’ will be used by the RSD Eco school action group next year, displayed on the school notice board and  included in this year’s school magazine.
