Welcome to Boarding

As the Head of Boarding, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Boarding Department at the Royal School Dungannon.

The Boarding Department offers both five and seven day boarding for boys and girls aged eleven to eighteen.  The boarding houses are located in the heart of the school, and provide a warm, friendly, home-from-home environment where our pupils thrive.

Pupils are cared for by a team of boarding staff, including matrons, tutors and house parents.  Staff are always on hand to offer support, advice and guidance, and ensure that pupils are supervised appropriately without unnecessary intrusion.

Head of Boarding

Pupils are encouraged to become independent and self-disciplined by taking responsibility for their own organisation, balancing study, activities and social time.  Boarders sign in and out of boarding using a specialised electronic system.

There is a strong focus on academic excellence at RSD, and pupils are supported by staff to ensure that they reach their full potential.  For those pupils whose first language is not English, additional English lessons are provided after school by fully qualified TEFL teachers.

Alongside academic focus, the school also has a strong extra-curricular life, and there are a wide range of activities for pupils to get involved in, as well as opportunities in the wider community.

The boarding department has recently been refurbished to provide pupils with modern and well-equipped dorms and washrooms.  Kitchens have also been fully re-fitted and a new recreation area created for boys and girls to mingle.  Other facilities include a high-speed Wi-Fi network (great for study but also for keeping in touch with home) and satellite Sky TV.

I would encourage you to arrange a visit to school if you are considering a place for your son or daughter.  This can be arranged by contacting me directly via email or telephoning the school reception office.  I would be delighted to give you a tour of day school and boarding, and can arrange a short meeting with the Headmaster.

I hope that you can find all the information you require on our website, however, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or require any further details.

SCHOOL CLOSURE UPDATE. 18th March 2020 at 8.30pm

The NI Executive have announced that schools in NI will close from Monday 23rd March. There is no defined time period for closure but they indicate this will be a long-term closure, probably through to the summer holidays and possibly beyond. It is essential, therefore, that parents and pupils prepare for an extended period of time out of school and the necessity for ‘distance learning’ via online resources. RSD will operate for the next two days as planned: Thursday 19th March – RSD open as usual for all pupils and staff. Friday 20th March – RSD open for Year 14 only and all staff. Monday 23rd March – RSD CLOSED. A full update has been emailed this evening to the RSD community.

New Head of RSD Boarding

It is with real sadness that we have said farewell to RSD’s Head of Boarding, Mrs Joanne Mawhinney. A major recruitment process took place to find Mrs Mawhinney’ s successor. With a lot of interest and a large number of applications and, following a rigorous selection process, I am delighted to announce that Ms Sarah Winslow has been appointed as our new Head of Boarding.
