The Physics of Martial Arts

A Physics event, ‘The Physics of Martial Arts, was arranged for all Year 11 Physics pupils on Wednesday 4th November, in conjunction with W5, followed by time in W5 interactive activities. Master Robert Howard (7th Degree Master in Taekwondo) gave a lecture on ‘The Physics of Martial Arts’. The lecture and demonstrations explained the physics behind the breaking of wood and tiles with Taekwon-Do hand and foot techniques. Master Howard, who also has a PhD in physics, explained the concepts of velocity, momentum, force and energy, while at the same time checking if his physics is correct by smashing timber and tiles. All of these topics have or will be completed in Year 11 Physics and examined in the final Unit 1 GCSE examination.
