Last week, under Mrs. Matthews’ supervision,  the new and enthusiastic members of the Charities Committee made a fresh start with the Shoe Box Appeal. The project is well-known to RSD yet remains a very special and enjoyable part of the school year. Moreover, it gives everyone an opportunity to challenge themselves and give support to those who require their help. For those who are not familiar with this project – every year Chrissy Wright, who happens to be Mrs. Hampton’s brother, pays a visit to RSD. He collects the shoe boxes, which are filled with small gifts,  and explains how important the project is.

Children in rich Western society take their comfortable life for granted, whereas children from poorer countries often have to treat food and clean water as luxury. However last year “Project Romania”, which RSD supports every year, was able to make a real difference – they brought Christmas gifts, bicycles, computers and play parks to children in Leslia (Romania). It is impossible to describe their immense joy and excitement as their parents cannot even afford to buy basics such as wood during winter when the temperature falls below zero degrees.

Before Tuesday 12^th October, when over 70 boxes were officially handed over to Chrissy Wright, a lot of work and effort was put into the preparation of every box. Energetic members of the Charities Committee dedicated their free periods as well as some lunch breaks to sort out the donations which were kindly given by the RSD community. Every one of the boxes was carefully wrapped so that the Romanian children can experience the excitement and anticipation of unwrapping. Moreover, the Charities Committee were impressed by the excellent quality of the gifts – for example, someone was so generous that they donated a designer hat and gloves and there were also some amazing-looking pyjamas!

A big thank you to everyone who contributed because with our help more than 70 children from the poorest areas of Romania will get a box with clothes, stationery, soaps and games.  The RSD community will look forward to seeing Mr. Wright again next year.
