1st XI through to second round of the Schools Plate

On Tuesday 31st January, RSD’s 1st XI hockey team travelled to Bangor to play Glenola Collegiate in the 1st round of the Schools Plate.

RSD started strong, dominating play and were rewarded with several penalty corners, which were unfortunately saved. Glenola proved to be strong opposition with several breaks which put the RSD defence under pressure.  However good communication between Rebecca Edwards, Caitlin Bain, Christine Kelly and Amy whittle insured that the score stayed at 0-0.

The first goal came half way through the first half, when after constant pressure in the Glenola circle, Amy McMullan made a superb strike to make the score 1-0 to RSD at half time.

Both teams came out even stronger in the second half; however RSD were determined to hold onto their lead. Outstanding play was seen in mid-field between Jane McClements, Georgina Mulligan and Karen Elliott, who provided some excellent passess for the forwards. With two minutes left, RSD made a final push into the Glenola half, and a linkage between Samantha Kelly and Amy McMullan, saw a pass into space were Dana Bettany rifled the ball into the back of the net to leave the final score 2-0 to RSD.

Thanks to coaches Mr Kerr and Miss Colgan for their support and also any parents who made the journey. RSD will now play either Coleraine High School or Bloomfield in the next round, which is to be played in the next fortnight.
